Post World War II Germany
At the end of World War II, Germany was divided into four sectors and two nations controlled by the major Allied powers. In the west, the United States, Great Britain, and France gained control over what was to be called West Germany. In the east, the Soviet Union claimed what was to be known as East Germany.

Divided Berlin
As Berlin fell into the hands of the Allies at the end of the war, each nation claimed control over the sector they held. Thus, Berlin was also divided into West and East. West Berlin was controlled by the United States, Great Britain, and France while the Soviet Union controlled East Berlin.
