At the end of World War II, Germany was divided into four sectors and two nations controlled by the major Allied powers.  In the west, the United States, Great Britain, and France gained control over what was to be called West Germany.  In the east, the Soviet Union claimed what was to be known as East Germany. 

*Identify the sectors for each of the four Allies at the end of WWII.

As Berlin fell into the hands of the Allies at the end of the war, each nation claimed control over the sector they held.  Thus, Berlin was also divided into West and East.  West Berlin was controlled by the United States, Great Britain, and France while the Soviet Union controlled East Berlin.  Using the map above and here, answer the following the questions in your group.

*If you were a East Berliner, would you want to travel to West Berlin?

*Which type of Berlin resident would have more freedom to travel?
